This year’s final truck convoy in support of Special Olympics took place in Dartmouth, N.S., on Sept. 21, and what a way to wrap up the season.
Those Maritimers — 210 of them — hauled in $152,000 in pledges and sponsorships this year, setting yet another North American record.
Edwin MacDonald of Atlantic Tilt ‘N Load earned the Lead Truck position this year with a staggering $33,000 in pledges, matched dollar-for-dollar by the company.
Harold Varbeff of S&M Trucking took second spot with pledges of $11,600, raised mostly through raffles and bottle drives.
Ron Hensbee of VA Construction was in third spot this year.
The convoy staged at Canadian Forces base Shearwater before proceeding on a 25-kilometre loop through Dartmouth and Eastern Passage. The route was lined with supporters cheering the drivers on.
Last year’s Truck Convoy was the largest in North America, and they out did themselves this year. With 15 fewer trucks, they still manage to top last years pledges collected by $2,000.
Nova Scotia topped the million-dollar mark in pledges and donations last year, after just 12 years running.
