The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will lift restrictions on the hauling of Classes 3 and 8 dangerous goods on the Ambassador Bridge, the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA), which supported the new rules, has announced.
The restrictions will be lifted Oct. 29, but those materials will only be permitted on the bridge during off-peak hours and under the supervision of vehicle escorts.
“The decision comes after multiple requests by the Ambassador Bridge to remove these longstanding restrictions, the completion of a technical study by MDOT, and months of consultations with various stakeholders, including the OTA, which supported the removal of all restrictions on Class 3 and 8 dangerous goods, with the goal of aligning the policy with all major ports of entry at the Canada-U.S. border,” OTA said in a statement.
Ambassador Bridge officials have indicated the bridge’s website will be updated with information outlining this new process in the coming days.
