McDougall named CTA’s national Driver of the Year

Kirt McDougall of Bison Transport has been named the Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) and Volvo Trucks Canada’s National Driver of the Year. The award recognizes McDougall’s outstanding contributions to the trucking industry.

Volvo Trucks Canada sponsors the national and provincial Driver of the Year awards. A panel of provincial trucking association judges selects the national winner based on a collision-free record and exemplary professionalism.

McDougall, who was also named the 2023 Saskatchewan Driver of the Year, was chosen from among the seven provincial drivers of the year for this national recognition.

His career with Bison Transport began in 2011 as a long combination vehicle turnpike driver based out of Saskatoon. Over the years, he has achieved an milestone of 1.15 million consecutive accident-free miles, showcasing his commitment to safety and professionalism on the road.

“With this award, Kirt is among the best of the best drivers in our great industry. He is a true ambassador to trucking,” said CTA president Stephen Laskowski in a news release. “On behalf of CTA and I am proud to honor such a passionate, dedicated professional as Canada’s top truck driver.”

“As the 2023 Saskatchewan Professional Driver of the Year, Kirt’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence have set a benchmark in our industry,” added Susan Ewart, executive director of the Saskatchewan Trucking Association.

Beyond his driving achievements, McDougall is known for his dedication to helping others. His efforts include supporting fellow Bison drivers, raising funds for the Humboldt Broncos players, and assisting his community in various capacities, the release said. McDougall and his wife also assist individuals with mental health and addiction issues and providing food and essential supplies to those in need.
